Gay Marriage in Virginia: Speaking for God -- And Man
Comments on our weekend Patch Poll focus largely on God v. Man, religious doctrine v. secular law. How about your views, Arlington?
When people want to have their say, they really want to have their say.
When Patch ran a poll on Sunday about whether it's time for gay marriage to be legal in Virginia, the comments came pouring in -- and that continues.
The poll ran on all 31 Patch sites in Virginia and D.C., and comments tended to lean toward what's called for in the Bible and religious doctrine versus what's called for in the Constitution and secular law.
"I'm not a homophobic but I am anti-gay marriage," commented Robert Marcum. "I think it goes against every religious and moral fiber this country was founded on. It's just one more way the liberals and this new generation is taking God out of everything. The bible says Jesus will return some day and I think he's going to be pretty ticked off."
C'mon, replied Heather Barber, in this way: "This country was not founded on any religious fiber - it was founded on the sole principle of protecting liberty of conscience and freedom and equality for all mankind."
So, that's part of the regional conversation. What do you say, Arlington? Is it about time to make gay marriage legal in Virginia? Tell us in the comments section below.

Here's a comment submitted by Carol Lewis:
To those who would quote the Bible as the basis for being anti-gay marriage, please don't cherry-pick your quotes. Here are some other things banned by the Bible that you may want to think about:
1) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
2) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?
5) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
6) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?

And one from Jack Stagman: God, from the beginning of time created marriage between man and a woman...Adam and Steve.
If it was his intention to make only two human brings and end the development of man kind, He would have created Adam and Steve.
God will not be mocked. I don't hate gays...just their sin, just as God does. Don't believe me..look at Romans Chapter 1

As the Bible, and religion in general, well post-dated the institution of marriage, it is certainly not a very reliable source for tracing the history of marriage. Marriage was a civil ceremony well before either Judaism or Christianity existed, and it remains at base a civil matter. Religions may control what goes on with respect to marriage as a religious rite, but that should have no effect on marriage as a civil matter, just as civil law ignores Catholic concepts regarding divorce. Nor may any religious practitioner create a legal marriage without the benefit of a state-issued license. There is no reason to conflate marriage as a civil matter with any religious concept of marriage. No religion need recognize a marriage, but neither should they be able to control its legal effect.
The statement that the Bible commands one man and one woman is of course quite silly. Indeed, the Bible explicitly sanctions polygamy, at least of the one man, many women sort. And in reality, polygamy was the dominant form of marriage throughout the world for most of history. This is not to argue for polygamy, but simply to emphasize that there need be no concordance between religious views of marriage and the position of the state.

Eric: Understanding what you're saying, how do we, as a country, get around the "One nation, Under God..." thing? Or do we?
Greg Monk

Well, really not all that tough. It doens't say, "One Nation, Under Leviticus...", after all. Just depends on what you constitute as "God". More and more churches and congregations of multiple denominations are becoming accepting of gay marriage. But in the end, Eric is right - we may be a nation founded under a Judeo-Christian majority - but we are also founded under the principles of Freedom, Justice, and Liberty ... for all.

This is the Arlington Patch, right? Pretty sure we're clearly settled on the side of decency and equality, here. The rest of Virginia will catch up, eventually.

this so-called same-sex people should not be allowed to touch a child born of man and woman, wheather the child is orphan or not. because sometimes they say that they want to adopt, and i want know why they need a child. when a woman is now married to woman and man maarried to man. all i know is that GOD has created man and woman to be husband and wife, not man and man or woman and woman.

Hi Kosey, your right, but God doesn't reveal His truth to everyone. True believers know that God is the same today as He has always been. People today seem to think God has changed His mind and now thinks everything is OK as long as there is "love" involved?

they ran the adv on sunday - when the churches probably made sure to tell their parishioners to continue the campaign of religious hatred against gay people
Northern VA is quite supportive of gay people. In the south - very anti. Of course its about real education instead of a rotten church agenda that has its roots in the capital of the confederacy - Richmond VA.
Gays are just the newest victims for the confederates

In regard to the person asking about 2 male animals having sex, yes, it happens quite often. There are many research examples of male animals refusing sex with females, preferring males instead. I know because I wrote my doctoral dissertation about the topic.
