The extreme cold over the next few days could exacerbate the problems Arlington County is having with a 60-year-old water main that's affecting people in at least seven neighborhoods.

Work has been ongoing since last week when a 30-inch main at Arlington Boulevard and North Irving Street broke.

Residents in Alcova Heights, Arlington Heights, Barcroft, Buckingham, Douglas Park, Lyon Park and Penrose have been affected, primarily by experiencing low water pressure. Nearby neighborhoods could also be affected.

A new section of pipe was installed by noon Wednesday, according to Jennifer Heilman with the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services.

County crews are systematically working to adjust valves to reduce the area of low pressure impact while repairs are under way, Heilman told Patch in an email. Crews will continue to work up to 16 hours a day, she wrote.

Residents in the affected area could continue to experience low water pressure during peak hours — 6 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. The county continues to ask people to help reduce demand during those hours by using dishwashers and washing machines at non-peak hours, or showering at a different time.

The low temperatures could cause more leaks, which would further reduce pressure, Heilman stated.
