The legacy of a little boy who died five years ago after battling brain cancer continues to inspire people to give their time and money to help encourage and empower families going through the same or similar struggle.

About 300 runners participated in the Mason Mile Race & Superstar Family Fun Day this weekend. Up to 400 people attended, and preliminary estimates show that the group raised about $5,000 for the Children's National Medical Center, according to organizers.

The Mason Leach Superstar Fund is designed to help patients "recognize their inner-strength and feel like a 'superstar,' " according to the charity's website.

Mason was a 5-year-old Key Elementary School student, and the Family Fun Day is co-sponsored by the Key PTA's Wellness Committee. The highlight of the day is the 1-mile run/walk along Key Boulevard.
