Street Level: Haze on Wilson, Never-Was and No-Longer

The creepy black and red building located at 3540 Wilson Blvd. has been demolished.

Ever wonder about that creepy back and red building, next to the Arlington Arts Center, located at 3540 Wilson Blvd.? I certainly did, until alas, it was torn down Friday.

Demolition continues on the building today, but what was the story behind this out-of-place building? The sign on the door said "Haze" but it was never opened as Haze.

According to Yelp.com, 3540 Wilson Blvd. was once home to RendezVous Cafe, a French cafe. (All four of the reviews on the site are from 2007.) Chowhound also offers reviews of RendezVous Cafe from 2007.

ARLnow.com reported on Friday that the county purchased the building over a year ago, and will turn the space into a park.

At least the black and red eyesore is gone!

About this column: Being at street level means you can see all the comings and goings and changes throughout the Ballston-Virginia Square area.
Are you glad that Haze is gone? Did you ever eat at RendezVous Cafe? Tell us in the comments.

We loved Rendezvous Cafe and were so sad to see it close down! It was great to have a (non-Starbucks) coffee shop to walk to from our home in Ashton Heights. Not sure what was up with Haze - it definitely did look creepy!

Before that it housed a coin ans stamp dealer, that also disappeared, followed by the Rendezvous for a short period of time. Small coins a stamp store was not very appeaing, but it provided easy access to philatelic and numesmatic supplies for accumulators and collectors alike. Not many around any more. Lathrow's on Lee Highway near Harrison is one of the few still around since the early 1960s. There is an independent coffee shop at the intersection of Washington, Clarendon, and Wilson Blvds. Nice walk on nice days.
