Three Arlington Metro Stations Among Safest in DC Area

Clarendon, Virginia Square and Arlington Cemetery had zero reported crimes in 2011.

Three of the top five safest Metro stations in the greater Washington area are in Arlington County, according to a new report from the transit authority.

Five of the 86 stations operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority had no reported crimes in 2011.

They are:

  • Arlington Cemetery
  • Clarendon
  • Eisenhower Avenue
  • Farragut West
  • Virginia Square

The most dangerous Metro stations in Virginia in 2011 were Franconia-Springfield (with 32 crimes reported) and Vienna (with 25 crimes reported). Still, those are relatively low numbers. When ranking every station by the number of reported crimes, Franconia-Springfield places 18th; Vienna, 27th.

Nine crimes were reported at the Rosslyn Metro last year; five at the Ballston Metro.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said nothing in particular was responsible for the general safety level of the stations in Arlington.

"Crime at individual Metro stations is often a reflection of the crime rate in the surrounding community," Stessel said.

The 10 stations with the most reported crimes last year are all in Washington and Maryland.

Stessel said "it takes a lot less" to rank among the most dangerous Metro stations these days because overall crime is down 16 percent systemwide.
