Street Sweeping, Storytime Recess, Shooshan Honored and More

Five things in and around Arlington County for Tuesday.

Street Sweeping Schedule: Arlington's expanded street sweeping service is under way. About 814 miles are swept countywide in Arlington's 59 civic associations. Sweepers hit six associations Monday. Today, they will sweep the Claremont, Columbia Forest, Douglas Park and Fairlington neighborhoods. Residents in affected areas are asked to move their cars to a driveway, garage or street outside of the sweeping zone. Click here for the complete street sweeping schedule for August, September and October.

Storytime Recess: Summer story time at Arlington Public Libraries has concluded. There will be no preschool storytimes at any library branch through Sept. 8. The fall 2013 storytimes will begin Monday, Sept. 9.

Shooshan Honored for Work with Homeless: John Shooshan has been named Outstanding Philanthropist by the Washington metro area chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He was nominated by the Volunteers of America Chesapeake and the Arlington Community Foundation. Read the announcement here

Music on the Mall: It happens Tuesdays at noon through Aug. 29. Today, listen to Mary Alouette, a Washington, D.C., native heavily influenced by guitarist Django Reinhardt. All concerts in this series are held at 7th and Jefferson Drive at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The Untold Story of American Nurses: Learn about nurses and medics who crash-landed behind Nazi lines in November 1943. Author Cate Lineberry discusses her book on the subject and signs books as well. The event is at noon, it’s free and no registration is required at the Spy Museum, 800 F St. NW, Washington, D.C.
