Hosted by: Government and International Affairs Program

We have the honor of hosting Dr. Robert Orttung, Assistant
Director of the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at The George Washington University, as he speaks about “The Legacy of the Sochi Olympics and Putin’s Russia.”

Dr. Gerard Toal, Director of the Government and International
Affairs program at Virginia Tech, will be moderating.Dr. Robert Orttung

The Sochi Games will be the most expensive in history. They have raised questions about Russia’s political economy, human rights situation, treatment of vulnerable populations, and security issues. This talk will examine what the Olympic experience tells us about today’s Russia and its future place in the international community.

Dr. Orttung’s upcoming book, The 2014 Winter Olympics and the Evolution of Putin’s Russia, with Sufian Zhemukhov will be released in September by Routledge. The issues surrounding the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were recently covered by an article in the NY Times Magazine which also mentioned the book.

This event is co-sponsored by MI+SPIA and VT Government and International Affairs.
