Arlington Public Schools will open with a two-hour delay on Tuesday, Jan. 7, due to expected high winds and low wind chills.
The Extended Day Program will also open two hours late, according to a message the school system issued Monday night. Community centers located in schools and the public pools will open at regular times, the message said.
Because of the weather, Arlington County announced its emergency winter shelter in the Courthouse area would be open all day Monday and Tuesday.
Arlington County government and courts will operate on a normal schedule Tuesday, according to an Arlington Alert.
The county issued this message in the alert shortly after 7 p.m. Monday:
Due to the impending frigid temperatures, remember to dress warm if you must go outside; keep pets inside; make sure to use flashlights should you lose power to light your home instead of lighting candles; keep your portable cell phones fully charged; check to make sure your medications are well stocked and that you have filled you car's gas tank.
