Excessive Heat Warning Issued Friday; Heat Index Could Reach 110

Hot day caps scorching week in Arlington.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning from noon to 8 p.m. Friday in Arlington and the surrounding area.

An excessive heat warning means that a "prolonged period of dangerously high temperatures will occur," according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to reach between 90 and 100 degrees, and that plus the high humidity will "create a dangers situation in which heat illnesses are expected," according to the warning.

The heat index will be around 110 degrees.

The weather service advises residents to check on relatives and neighbors and to take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.

Remember to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing if possible and drink plenty of water.

In the case of a suspected heat stroke, call 911.

The greater Washington area could see scattered showers and thunderstorms, mostly before 8 p.m.

Saturday's high is forecast to be near 95 degrees with a heat index as high as 101. Sunday should be a bit cooler, with a high of 88 degrees, according to the weather service.
