The state Transportation Department anticipates the $51.5 million Washington Boulevard bridge project will be complete by the summer of 2015.

The new bridge will be wider, longer and have more turning lanes. Washington Boulevard carries more than 80,000 vehicles over Columbia Pike each day, according to VDOT.

A new traffic pattern was established in December to accommodate the construction.
