From the Artisphere to the Airport: Free Art Exhibits in Arlington

Artomatic's latest exhibits provide an opportunity to see some unique, free art without leaving Arlington.

The museums along the Mall are probably among those that come to mind when we think of places in the local area to view art. However, Arlingtonians won’t have to leave Virginia in May and June to check out two unique exhibits produced by Artomatic.

Artomatic is “an open-entry creative arts showcase of visual art, music, film, performance, poetry and fashion,” according to its website. Since its beginnings in 1999, Artomatic has displayed the creations of participating artists at numerous events for the public’s enjoyment.

If you loved looking at the winners of the Washington Post Peeps Diorama Contest online, then head over to the Artisphere (1101 Wilson Blvd.) by May 31 for a free look at some of the highlights from this year’s contest. Artomatic has partnered with the Artisphere to present some of the contest’s most memorable entries. Among the more than 20 entries on view are the first place winner, “Chilean CoPeepapo Mine Rescue,” as well as finalists “Escalator Collapse at Peepy Bottom” and “Peepco.”

The exhibit can be viewed anytime during the Artisphere’s regular hours (Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.-2 a.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-9 p.m.).

The Artisphere will hold children’s activities centered around the Peeps exhibit on Saturday, May 21 from noon to 4 p.m.. The free activities will include a children’s tour of the dioramas and Peeps diorama-making workshops. Event participants will receive Peeps treats.

Also on display from Artomatic is its Artomatic Takes Flight exhibit at Reagan National Airport. The exhibit, located in the hallway connecting to Terminal A, features 83 pieces by Artomatic artists. Artwork of all types is on display, from mixed media to watercolor to digital photography and more. The exhibit is free and will be open until June 25.

If you’ve never explored the art on display at the Artisphere or are curious about what an art exhibit at an airport looks like, consider paying a visit to one or both of these exhibits in May or June, both located in our own backyard!
