Hope Operas Return to the Comedy Spot in October

Five serials aim to raise money for five charities.

A series of original musicals will hit the stage at the Comedy Spot in October in an effort to raise money for five different charities.

The Hope Operas, which are written and directed by Washington-area theater professionals, begin Oct. 1. Each show will present a 10- to 15-minute episode that ends in a cliffhanger, according to a news release. The audience will vote on their favorite serial, and the most popular will receive the most money for its charity.

The serials include:

"Body Electric," which asks if you met an android on the street, would you know it? This show benefits Teens Run DC, the flagship program at the Center for Self Discovery. Teens Run DC helps at-risk children achieve their goals through a mentoring and distance running program.

"Davey Jones' Locker" is described as a "rocking" update of the Legend of the Flying Dutchman. It benefits the Veteran Artist Program, which provides art therapy for veterans.

"Orpheus in Love" is a modern telling of the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice and is described as a "supernatural love story of second chances." This serial benefits the Big Apple Circus' Clown Care Program, through which clown doctors visit young patients.

"Vanilla Latte" is a tale about a "badass barista" who takes on a group of villains who plan world domination through Wi-Fi. It benefits the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League, which builds, sustains and advocates for programs and services for LGBT youth.

“World Wrestling Organization Saturday Night Savage Uncut” pits Renegade Rogan against Henry “the Herc” Hercules in what is described as "a no-holds-barred beatdown." This show benefits the USO, which works with overseas troops and helps keep them connected to their families.

The Hope Operas show at 8 p.m. Mondays in October at the Comedy Spot on the third floor of Ballston Common Mall.
