Donate old cell phones, iPods, tablets or ereaders to Books for America — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to build and improve libraries in schools, shelters and many other organizations.

We have donated more than $4.5 million worth of books to schools, etc., but we want to do so much more! We'll sell the gadgets online to fund our literacy efforts and people will receive a great (and easy) tax deduction. Some of the phones will be given to organizations we work with that support abused women (or otherwise disadvantaged women or families). It is important to note that we ourselves are a charity and we sell the items ourselves. This means that 100 percent of the net revenue will support our literacy and educational efforts, unlike many phone donation programs that are run by for-profit fundraising companies and only return a small percentage to charities.

We have a pre-paid address label that can downloaded from our website. If need be, we can mail a postage-paid bubble envelope for cell phones, iPods, ereaders and iPads.  

Important details -- what we can use:

Cell Phones, Blackberrys, iPods, Tablets, eReaders and other electronic gadgets must be from the last six years. Must be in working condition. We do not need instruction manuals or the original boxes — they do not add to the sales value of the items, but do add to the cost of shipping the items to us. Please be sure to include the power cable (not required for Apple products, but it sure would be helpful).

Laptops — Must be from the last seven years. Laptops do not have to be functioning. We are sorry, but we cannot offer a pre-paid label for laptop donations. You can mail them to us via Parcel Post, or perhaps a flat-rate Priority Mail box.

Let us know if you have gadgets (digital cameras, etc.) that we did not include in this list. We'll take a look and see if it would be worth reselling!
