Arlington Board OKs New Shops, Restaurants at Pentagon City Mall

Developer also commits to transportation improvements to make South Hayes Street more accessible to pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and vehicles.

The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved a pair of amendments that will allow for five to seven new retail shops and restaurants at the Pentagon City Mall.

The 51,000-square-foot expansion of the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City consists of a two-story, glass-and-metal addition to the mall that will allow the new businesses to open onto South Hayes Street.

The developer, Simon Property Group, also committed to a number of transportation improvements, some of which are already underway, that are designed to make South Hayes Street between South 15th Street and Army Navy Drive more accessible to pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and motorists, according to a news release.

“This expansion plan for one of the region's most popular malls fits perfectly with the County's goal of making Pentagon City a more lively, walkable area," Arlington County Board Chairman Walter Tejada said in a statement. "Bringing new shops and restaurants to (South) Hayes Street will be good for the mall and good for the neighborhood."

The 1 million-square-foot  mall, completed in 1989, is at 1100 S. Hayes St. and houses more than 170 retailers and restaurants.

The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City has added a number of new or renovated stores in the past year and often enjoys a 100-percent occupancy rate.

Long-term plans call for a complete remodel of the mall's interior and exterior.
