Expert Panel to Preview 'Four Towns of Tysons'

After four Silver Line metro stations open in Tysons Corner, smaller urban centers will develop around those new stations.

You may think of Tysons Corner as one large, congested corporate hub overlapping established, more residential communities in Falls Church, McLean and Vienna, but that idea may be a thing of the past come 2014.

The emerging concept of the "four towns of Tysons" is the subject a panel of developers and local experts will take on at a Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce discussion on Wednesday.

"Tysons will benefit from four new Silver Line Metro stations coming in 2013 and be transformed into a walkable, lively urban center," a press release from the Chamber of Commerce reports.

The panel will address:

  • "How will the four Towns of Tysons be different, and which Town is best for your business needs?"
  • "What are the specific construction timing and economic issues that affect each of the Towns?"
  • "How will future space and amenities in Tysons appeal to the next generation workforce?"

Panelists will include Keith S. Turner, vice president of Cityline Partners; Timothy J. Steffan, senior vice president of Macerich; Aaron J. Georgelas, a partner in the Georgelas Group; Stephen M. Cumbie, president of NVCommercial. Stuart "Stu" Mendelsohn, a partner with Holland & Knight, will moderate the discussion.

The presentation will run from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Gannett Building auditorium in McLean. The cost to attend is $35 for chamber members and $45 for nonmembers. For more information about registration, visit the Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce website.

I can't afford $45 but it sounds interesting. Do they allow you in free? If so, I hope you will give us the gist. At this point I have seen no details, only smudgy drawings showing four vague masses. It would be a shame if we allowed the skyline to go completely random like most cities. There is a chance to do it right, and we should not let it slip away.

"transformed into a walkable, lively urban center".... As a former resident of Tysons for three years, I'll believe it when I see it. Look at the existing residential in Tysons, especially the towers around Harris Teeter...they're empty. Take a look at night at how many units have lights on. Then move towards the mall where they're constructing 3-4 new towers of residential, commercial, and mixed use. If you build it...they will come? Tysons will not be the new Arlington. Young workers traditionally want affordable housing and night life; Tysons currently offers neither. Older folks with the economics to afford Tysons traditionally have families and want more green space. The townhomes I lived in were probably >50% corporate housing. That's not the way to build "four towns," let alone one.
