Should You Boycott Rolling Stone?

The music and entertainment magazine's choice to publish a cover photo of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev sparks debate.

Blogger Frank Zabierek and others are urging consumers to boycott Rolling Stone, its advertisers and retailers that sell it for publishing a "'glamour shot' type photo" of a suspected terrorist on the front cover of its latest issue.

"In essence, Rolling Stone is now 'celebrifying' this sick, demented mass murderer in much the same fashion as it did legitimate rock celebrities like Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison about 40 years ago," he writes.

Do you support boycotting the magazine for its editorial choices? Did Rolling Stone go too far?

Zabierek does. "For those of you who still have some semblance of decency left, I strongly urge you and your loved ones to NOT buy this latest Rolling Stone issue, please don’t patronize any of the businesses who choose to advertise in Rolling Stone magazine, and help support the actual victims of Tsarnaev’s bomb attacks who either lost their limbs or life at last April’s Boston Marathon," he writes. Read the rest of Zabierek's blog on Nashua Patch here

Boston politicians criticized Rolling Stone for treating the bombing suspect as a rock star and cultural icon.

Rolling Stone magazine released a statement explaining its editorial decision: "Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, and our thoughts are always with them and their families. The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling Stone's long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day. The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens."
