Week of the Fourth a Roller Coaster After Colossal Storm

How our bodies cope in the aftermath of natural catastrophe

Happy Post-Fourth of July

Hello All

I hope you are all well, cool, happy and rested after America’s Birthday Celebrations.

I am a proud American.

I was enthralled to see such courteous behavior on the roads as so many of the power lines were down and the red lights not working. People actually communicating with each other in the huge line at the only Starbucks open for miles around.

The scorching temperatures notch up bad tempers at the best of times, but in adversity it seemed we were able to pull it together and actually be nice to each other.

What a roller coaster week! We were very much luckier than so many others as power was restored to the office almost instantaneously after the storm; we were able to provide tea and biscuits (British staff you know) to many of our patients who came in having no electricity at home.

Monday Morning, 07-02-12

I saw my first patient that morning who came in as direct result of the colossal storm of Friday night.

As I said, we feel lucky here, but this patient was more grateful than most; he had to lay down his motor bike on the George Washington Parkway as a tree was falling on the road in the immediate aftermath. He has hurt his body from top to toe having hit the road and being stuck in the top branches of a tree that fell down in front of him. He is astounded to be still walking around, a few inches further down the road and who knows what part of the tree would have struck him.

His story is just the beginning of the pattern that our office sees after catastrophic weather.

It tends to be the cleaning up after a storm, be it hurricane, tornado or snow fall that injures backs, arms and neck. All the bending, twisting, lifting and unaccustomed extra exertion chain sawing and shoveling straining the body allows subluxations in the spinal joints.

There are those patients who will come and see me because they are in pain, having pulled a muscle, with a migraine, an asthma attack or having received a physical trauma like our friend Monday morning. But there are also those who, knowing their bodies have been under added strain, realize the importance of having a well adjusted body. ie; looking after the nervous system, the master controller of the body.

I was without power/phone/internet at home for more than 3 days. It was hot and sticky, I am fortunate to have a generator so I continually had to ensure it had fuel by hefting cans of gas. I slept on the office floor and my back was sore from not sleeping on a proper bed. I was extra stressed as I worried over my massage therapist and office manager. I know that the only way for me to get rid of the extra toxins I absorbed through eating less than healthy food from several local eateries and to regulate my diet and become the best person I can be is to get to a decent chiropractor and get myself WELL ADJUSTED because I too become subluxated just like everyone else!!

But amazingly, thankfully, no injuries to anyone in my family nor any structural damage, just the mess to contend with. Yes, we were lucky.

Yours in Health
