Update: Nearly 600 Without Power in Arlington
Storms leave scattered outages throughout Arlington County.
Update (6:05 p.m.): The majority of power outages in Arlington on Thursday weren't caused by the storm that had been predicted to be potentially damaging.
As many as 1,900 Dominion Virginia Power customers in Arlington lost power Thursday when a paving contractor near Carlin Springs hit a pole, causing it to break and wires to come down, spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson told Patch. The contractor does not work for Dominion.
The power company was able to dispatch crews quickly, so many of those affected customers have seen their electricity restored.

Only some of Thursday's outages were caused by the storm, Anderson said — including one instance where limbs that feel on lines in the area of Glebe Road and Williamsburg.

Food Safety
- An electrical power outage will affect the safe storage of refrigerated and frozen foods. Perishable food such as meat, poultry, seafood, milk and eggs that are not stored properly refrigerated or frozen may cause illness if consumed.
- The federal resource foodsafety.gov has a chart detailing how long specific foods remain safe when the power goes out. See: Refrigerated Food and Power Outages: When to Save and When to Throw Out
Additional Tips
- Stay away from downed wires as they may be live with electricity, even if they aren’t actively sparking.
- Do not use candles as they may pose a fire threat. Stock up on batteries for your flashlights before the storm hits.
- Be sure to operate generators safely.
