Navy Commander Witnesses Man Get Shot: 'I Was Running For My Life'

U.S. Navy Cmdr. Tim Jirus heard four shots Monday morning in the Navy Yard building in Washington just before the fire alarm sounded, signaling an evacuation.

Once outside, a man approached him from a nearby maintenance building.

They talked briefly, and then Jirus heard two more shots.

The man beside him was struck in the head and likely killed, Jirus said.

"I may be calm now, but I guarantee when I was running, I wasn't looking back," he told reporters at a bus stop near New Jersey and M streets.

"I was running for my life."
