Rewind: Meteors, Moran Moving, Marathon

Hundreds of people spent part of their lunch hour outside Thursday in Arlington, and it wasn’t just because of the nice weather. About 800 people were evacuated from the Naval Support Facility at 701 S. Courthouse Road on Thursday after a white, powdery substance was found in the facility's mailroom, according to the Federal Times. The Arlington County Fire Department's Hazmat Team responded and determined it to be a non-hazardous substance. Another white powder report in Ballston turned out to be pollen.

The bombing tragedy at the Boston Marathon reverberated in Virginia and right here in Arlington this week. Arlington businesses and institutions took to social media to share their thoughts and concerns for those affected by the explosions at the Boston Marathon on Monday. Eighty-two marathon runners were from Arlington. 

One resident from the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria was running the marathon for the 35th consecutive time when the bombs went off. Read his story here.

Shirlington resident and local U.S. Rep. Jim Moran is moving from Shirlington to Del Ray, he announced this week.

In Alexandria, two businesses are experiencing permit-related delays. The Safeway on King Street was supposed to close in March for extensive renovations and an expansion, but it is still open. The Burger 7 in Foxchase may open in May, after permit and construction delays pushed the opening back from April.
