Report: Don Beyer to Enter Race for Congress

Don Beyer, the former Virginia lieutenant governor, is expected to enter the race for Virginia's 8th Congressional District, according to The Washington Post.

The seat will be up for grabs in November following the exit of U.S. Rep. Jim Moran.

“Yes, my plans are coming together,” Beyer, a Democrat, wrote in an email Sunday to The Washington Post. “I do plan to file the appropriate paperwork [Monday] or Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission and the Virginia State Board of Elections.”

The owner of several successful Northern Virginia car dealerships, Beyer most recently served as U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein from 2009 to 2013.

Beyer’s entrance into the race could change its dynamic if he’s willing to put some of his personal wealth into a campaign.

On Thursday, Alexandria Del. Charniele Herring (D) announced her candidacy hours after Arlington Del. Patrick Hope (D) said he was forming of an exploratory committee for the 8th Congressional District.

Bruce Shuttleworth, a former Navy fighter pilot and self-described feminist, is the only other candidate to have officially announced a bid.

Several other Democrats are expected to enter the race, including state Sen. Adam Ebbin (Alexandria), Del. Alfonso Lopez (Arlington) and Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, according to the report.

The 8th Congressional District includes much of Northern Virginia, from McLean to Woodbridge, following the Potomac River on one side and stretching over to Falls Church and parts of Annandale and Springfield on the other.
