Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree in Shirlington Village

Hundreds turn out for annual event.

Happy Holidays, Shirlington.

Shirlie Lights Up the Village took place Tuesday night, despite a few traffic backups that probably seemed longer than they were thanks to a water main break nearby earlier in the day.

Hundreds turned out for the annual event, which featured the lighting of the tree, photos with Santa, live music and horse-drawn carriage rides.

"It's just nice, a little village setting," said Beth Hodgin of Fairlington, who had just finished dancing with her 3-year-old daughter, Addison, to "Jingle Bell Rocks."

"That's kind of why we love Shirlington, too," she said. "It's a nice way to celebrate. It's very family-friendly and dog-friendly here."

Allison Seymour from Fox 5 DC and Santa — helped by a small mob of youngsters — did the tree-lighting honors.
