Annie Kaylor, Longtime LGBT Supporter, Dies at 85

Kaylor presided over an early gay and lesbian social club in DC.

Annie Kaylor, known for her kind and welcoming demeanor as much as the restaurant she helmed in Washington, died July 24 in Arlington. She was 85.

Kaylor helmed Annie's Paramount Steakhouse for more than 50 years, making it "an early sanctuary" for gay and lesbian residents in the metropolitan area, according to the Washington Post.

"Her commitment to impeccable service with a fun attitude, welcoming hospitality to ALL, and unwavering support to the GLBT community and DuPont Circle neighborhood has set a high standard for everyone else to follow," according to a brief biography of Kaylor on the restaurant's website.

Kaylor died of congestive heart failure, her daughter told the Post.

She is survived by five children, nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and others, according to her death notice.

A private service is planned and a memorial will be scheduled.

Contributions may be made to VITAS Innovative Hospice Care in Vienna or Food and Friends in Washington, according to the notice.
