John James Barnes Sr., 92

John James Barnes Sr., 92, of Arlington County, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital.

He is survived by daughters Kitsy Young of Montclair and Shirley Leonard of Front Royal; sons John James Barnes of Mechanicsville and Chuck Barnes of Arlington; as well as his sister, Cecile Odom.

Mr. Barnes also leaves behind ten grandchildren, Tres and Shawn McEvoy, and Dawn Jones of McLean, VA the three he raised, and Anthony, Jeff, Tory and Stevie Barnes, Rachael and Mason Young, and Beth Petersavage. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Barnes was a devoted Catholic, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who fought in WW II in the Battle of the Bulge. He was the President of Barnes Engineering and Science in Mobile, Alabama.  He retired from the Government in 1987 after 42 years of service where he worked at the Pentagon and worked for the NASA program in 1968-1969.  He was the president of the Washington D.C. Hypnotic Guild, and a member of VFW and the American Legion.

The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Quantico National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council 4034, 4724 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.
