3 Victims of Spain Train Wreck Have Deep Arlington Ties

Woman killed worked for Catholic Diocese of Arlington. Injured daughter attends Bishop O'Connell.

Among the 80 people killed in the train wreck in Spain caught on a chilling video Wednesday was one Virginia woman, Ana-Maria Cordoba, a benefits specialist for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington.

The Catholic News Service reported the death on Thursday. Her husband, Philippe, and daughter, Christina, a rising senior at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, were injured in the crash, the news service reported. The family has attended St. Mary of Sorrows Parish in Fairfax.

Philippe and Christina Cordoba were listed in stable condition at the local hospital, the news service reported, adding that the family members were en route to meet the Cordoba's son, Santiago, who had just completed a pilgrimage in Spain.

The train wrecked Wednesday night in the northwestern Spanish town of Santiago de Compostela. Video of the train wreck shows it racing into view and derailing while taking a curve.

The cars crashed into a wall of concrete and flipped onto their sides while skidding along the tracks.

Deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf has confirmed that one American was killed and at least five U.S. citizens were injured, according to CNN.
