Washington Boulevard near Glebe Road was shut down Wednesday for an investigation of an early-morning car crash involving an Arlington County Police officer.

An Arlington County police officer was hospitalized with "serious injuries" Wednesday following an early-morning, on-duty car crash.

Police say the collision happened while the officer was responding to a call about a large group of disorderly people at Ballston Mall.

The 40-year-old officer, whose name has not been released, was dispatched at about 2:16 a.m. Wednesday. He collided with a 21-year-old woman, who also was hospitalized with minor injuries, according to an Arlington County Police Department news release.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Glebe Road. The officer, who has been with the department for about five years, was traveling south on Glebe.

Although some news outlets have reported that the driver of the other car had been drinking, Arlington Detective Crystal Nosal would not confirm that. She did say police are investigating all possibilities that could have caused to the crash.

“The officer has serious injuries. At this time it does not appear to be life threatening," Nosal said.

She added the other driver, whose name also has not been released, was hospitalized "as a precaution.”

The ensuing investigation left drivers who use Washington Boulevard for their morning commute looking for an alternate route Wednesday morning.
