Man Charged in Early Morning Machete Attack Outside Library

Police: Victims had been sleeping on a bench outside Arlington Central Library.

Arlington County police have charged a 28-year-old man with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding following a machete attack against two homeless men early this morning.

Derrick Sutherland, who has no fixed address, is being held without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility.

Investigators say Sutherland approached two homeless men who had been sleeping on a bench outside Arlington Central Library shortly before 3 a.m. Monday. He began arguing with them.

The argument grew heated, and Sutherland allegedly pulled out a machete and struck each victim multiple times. Both men — twin brothers — sustained "significant" but non-life-threatening injuries and were taking to the George Washington University Hospital.

Investigators believe Sutherland ran away after the attack and couldn't be found this morning. Police later located in the area of Wilson Boulevard and North Piedmont Street, according to a news release.
