Police: Alexandria Man Charged with Impersonating Officer

A 35-year-old Alexandria man has been jailed on two counts of impersonating an officer.

The Arlington County Police Department arrested Anthony Brent on Sunday evening and charged him with impersonating an officer and unlawful wearing of a police insignia.

Brent remained jailed Tuesday afternoon on a total $3,500 secured bond, according to the Arlington County Sheriff's Office.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, Brent was at a rental car establishment in the 2600 block of South Jefferson Davis Highway, according to police.

He was there "hanging around talking to a couple of employees," police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. He does not work there.

Brent didn't have a uniform but did display a security badge and presented himself as an officer, Sternbeck said. He was trying to get a cigarette, Sternbeck said.

The business manager became suspicious and called police.

"He identified himself as an off-duty police officer," Sternbeck said."His story wasn't jiving with what he was saying. Through the interview process, we determined he was not a legitimate police officer."

Sternbeck would not say which police agency the man claimed to work for.
