Police: Homeless Men Attacked Outside Arlington Central Library

Men were sleeping on bench, according to police.

Two homeless men were attacked outside of Arlington Central Library early Monday, according to police.

The victims — two twin brothers — were sleeping on a bench outside the library shortly before 3 a.m. when someone approached them and an argument ensued, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck told Patch.

The argument escalated, and the man pulled out what investigators are calling a "blunt force object" — a bat, or something similar — and began beating the two men.

"We're not 100 percent certain of what it was," Sternbeck said. "We're not sure the victims saw the object they were being attacked with. And it's one way we could tie the subject to the crime."

The twins sustained numerous cuts to their upper bodies and "significant" but non-life-threatening injuries, Sternbeck said. They were taken to George Washington University Hospital.

Investigators aren't sure what the men were arguing about.

Detectives planned to visit the hospital Monday to talk more with the victims, Sternbeck said.

"We have a suspicion on who it might be," he said. "But our detectives are working diligently with the victims. Hopefully, we'll apprehend the subject in a short amount of time."
