Police: Man Stabbed in Chest Near Ballston Metro

Victim was walking from bar to hotel, Arlington police spokesman says.

An out-of-state man walking near the Ballston Metro Station late at night this week was stabbed in the chest after an argument with a stranger, according to the Arlington County Police Department.

The 30-year-old man and a friend had left a bar and were walking to a hotel at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to police.

They were approached by a man in a light blue skullcap in the 4200 block of North Fairfax Drive and an argument ensued. Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck did not know what sparked the verbal exchange.

Investigators were only able to gather "bits and pieces" of what happened next, Sternbeck said, due to the victim being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack.

"We're not getting into details right now," Sternbeck said. "Let's just say the victim did not realize he had been stabbed until he made it back to his room."

Nothing was taken during the confrontation, Sternbeck said. Afterward, the attacker ran away toward the Metro station.

Once the man realized he had been stabbed, his friend drove him to Virginia Hospital Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The attacker was said to be in his 30s, about 5-foot-9 and weighing 150 pounds. In addition to the skullcap, he was wearing khaki jacket with a black vest over it, according to police.
