Reports: Teen Driver in Fatal Skateboarding Crash Sentenced

John Malvar died in June.

An Arlington County judge on Thursday handed down a sentence to a 17-year-old student who was involved in a fatal skateboarding crash this summer.

The teen was driving a pickup truck while 18-year-old John Malvar was riding a skateboard and holding on to the driver's side of the vehicle in June. Police at the time said they believed Malvar lost his balance and fell to the ground, ultimately dying from the incident.

The driver, who pleaded guilty to reckless driving in September, was sentenced to a weekend in jail, six months of probation and 100 hours of community service, according to the Associated Press.

“I lost a dear friend,” the 17-year-old said in court, according to the Washington Post. “I can’t imagine how it felt to be a parent.”

Neither the Post nor the AP identified the teenager.

Washington-Lee High School awarded a posthumous diploma to Malvar in June. The teen driver was charged later that month.

As friends gathered to memorialize Malvar in July, his father was found dead in his apartment, apparently of natural causes.
