The FBI has identified the suspect killed in the Washington Navy Yard shooting rampage as Aaron Alexis, 34, who apparently used his status as a contractor to gain access to the complex in Washington's Southeast quadrant.

Alexis was killed during a Monday morning shooting rampage at the Navy Yard that left at least 12 people dead.

While Alexis was apparently arrested, but never convicted, on a weapons charge, so far nothing is known about his service in the Navy that would raise red flags. In fact, the Navy had awarded Alexis a National Defense Service Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He joined the Navy as a recruit in May 2007 in Great Lakes, Illinois, eventually making his way down to the Fleet Logistics Support Squadron in Fort Worth, Texas. He achieved the rank of Aviation Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class / AE3 on Dec. 16, 2009.

According to The Washington Post, who quoted his aunt Helen Weeks, Aaron Alexis grew up in Brooklyn with his mother Sarah and father Anthony Alexis.

“We haven’t seen him for years,” Weeks told the paper in a telephone interview. “I know he was in the military. He served abroad. I think he was doing some kind of computer work.”

Information with the picture of Aaron Alexis, posted on MugshotsOnline.com, says he was arrested in 2010 for "discharge of firearm in certain municipalities" in Fort Worth, Texas.

An arrest record from Tarrant County in September 2010 shows Alexis was arrested for discharging his weapon.

According to NBC News, a neighbor called police “after hearing a bullet rip through her floor and ceiling. He told police he had been cleaning the weapon when it slipped and accidentally pulled the trigger. They filed the police with the district attorney’s office but charges were never filed.”

Authorities ask anyone who has information on Alexis to contact the FBI's Washington, DC Field Office at 202/278-2000 or 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Hey Williams stupid Obama is the one that said that that first so he is the biggest idiot of all. As being a leader and saying that makes him even worst than that.
doug ramsey September 16, 2013 at 07:56 PM
Hey Samuel your still counting statement shows how stupid you are. I watch a documentary on Denver Colorado last night I saw was blacks selling and buying the crack they were talking about.

I am sure this will make Obama happy as it distracts from his “red line” problem. And it helps with his agenda to destroy the second amendment and disarm America. Liberals love to exploit a tragedy.

Michelle, I flagged your comment "inappropriate"! I see Patch hasn't removed it yet. With your crude language, calling people names, you are worse than the people you blame for things.

All the sad news, then reading all the hateful comments here, it is enough to make a sane man cry.

What motivation do you think will be given for this act? And yes, I am going to blame it on someone other then the shooter for coming up with the idea and providing incentive for the shooter to do something rash. Sadly, in too many of these situations the shooter either kills themselves or is killed by the police. But, I wonder if these officers that are so highly trained aren't instructed to make sure individuals like this one are not taken alive. Of course, if I were the kind to go for such a deal, I would do the job for them after I saw that my family was secured for at least three generations hence and then create the chaos I was hired to make. Knowing that I would certainly die in such a case, I would have to have it happen in a shoot out.

The reason I said that I am blaming the shooting on someone other then the shooter in response to Billy because I am a liberal from the Commonwealth of Virginia
G.Mellinger September 16, 2013 at 08:58 PM
I have to say this gun crap is out of hand. Everyone blames the gun when it is the trigger finger behind it. Who knows there motives and who cares. It's probably something insane anyway. I cherish the fact that I can own and possess firearms and it's worthless chicken shits that have mental issues that are putting it at jeopardy. By the way I have owned numerous weapons for years without any issues. It seems to me that security wasn't doing there job if this guy walked into work at a naval ship yard with an AR-15. What's up with that?

You do realize that the qualifications for the GWOT Medal and the National Defense Medal are no more than "has a pulse", right?
G.Mellinger September 16, 2013 at 09:27 PM
I'm telling you all, that there are a lot of functionally insane people out their in all of our daily lives, ready to snap at a seconds notice. That is the reality of it. Who knows what his trigger was, he just decided to use a rifle. Could have been a knife, a bomb, anything. That is what needs to be addressed.

To Sue and Others: No. He is a son and a brother of Wayne La Pierre and every US Senator who voted against expanded background checks. In fact, all of them ought to be prosecuted as accomplices.

Right on, Jozek Niegorol!

That's what I'm talking about Jozek. and Denise, Al and Jesse are hanging out with Stevie Wonder avoiding Florida. I'm sure Uncle Ted would agree!!!

Has anyone wondered WHY our TRAINED Military people are not allowed to carry their issued side arms on Base and now serve in a GUN FREE KILLING ZONE?? One of President Bill Clinton's first edicts in 93 was to disarm our Military personnel while on base. Who knows how many people would have escaped death or injury at Fort Hood the Naval installation today if they were allowed to carry their issued loaded side arms.

Obama's father would be proud of Aaron. A drunk, a pervert and a wonderful husband. Any one with a father like that has to grow up screwed up

Denise, dj, Rose-Marie, Gale, Doug Ramsey and others making bigoted comments about Black people and crime . . . Did you happen to notice that a goodly number of the brave law enforcement professionals -- local, federal, and military -- who responded to this atrocity were Black? Did you also know that Blacks make up 17.8 percent of the active duty U.S. military (21.5 percent of the Army and 19.3 percent of the Navy) who serve our country so honorably, both at home and abroad? In comparison, what have each of you contributed to the security of this great nation?
Frank J. Austin September 16, 2013 at 10:37 PM
How does this happen in an area of the United States where the gun laws are stricter than anywhere else ???
Smarterboy09 September 16, 2013 at 10:38 PM
Another assault rifle NOT used for "self-defense." What a surprise!!
Gomer Wumphf September 16, 2013 at 11:10 PM
Kinda looks like he could have been Obama's son.
Jamie Green September 16, 2013 at 11:24 PM
And people say we are in a post-racial society? Read comments above and see that racism is alive and well in the U.S. of A. So very disturbing.
Jake Mooney September 16, 2013 at 11:36 PM
Jamie.... Yes it's alive and being stoked by the racists on the "victim" side. White people can get tired of racism and criminal activities as well as blacks. There's no free ride forever due to the injustices of the past.

Christopher Koulouris September 17, 2013 at 12:12 AM
What's compelling is why Aaron Alexis as a new civilian hire methodically went about choosing his targets? Was this really about settling old scores, terrorism or something much more, after all think about the mindset to take down a military complex (of all things) with an assassination plan aimed at maximum lethal effect… http://scallywagandvagabond.com/2013/09/aaron-alexis-washington-navy-gunman-killed-fired-selectively-targets/

Yet another massacre because of this country's reckless policy of a gun for every Tom, Dick, and Harry to shoot at and shoot down whomever they please. When are the people going to take back their country from the NRA?
Carol Lewis September 17, 2013 at 01:05 PM
Nothing like a shooting to bring out the worst in some Patch readers. Denise, Egon, and Bill Solter, if you'd watch his show you'd know that Rev Al always talks about shootings no matter what the race of the perpetrator and he did yesterday. Gale and RoseMarie, you might want to stop and think about the fact that the vast overwhelming majority of mass shooters are white, in fact all of them were in the recent shootings except this guy. And Gale, no, "those people" do not commit most of the crimes. As for black on white crime, most white people are killed by other white people because that is who is in their neighborhoods; most black people are killed by other black people. I don't want your guns, I just want common sense laws governing them. You have to register your dog, for pete's sake, why not your gun.
