'Deep Throat' Parking Garage to Be Demolished by 2017

The historic Watergate site, where Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward held secret meetings with 'Deep Throat,' will be torn down by 2017.

The five members of the Arlington County Board voted unanimously Saturday to demolish the historic Rosslyn parking garage, where Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward and FBI official Mark Felt, otherwise known as “Deep Throat,” secretly convened during the Watergate scandal.

The meeting was central to President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974.

Monday Properties plans to raze the two aging office buildings at 1401 Wilson Blvd and 1400 Key Blvd in the Rosslyn neighborhood.

The board voted to demolish the two 12-story, 1960s-era buildings by 2017, replacing them with a 28-story, 274-unit high-density apartment complex and a separate commercial building housing office and retail space, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"The Rosslyn of the '70s allowed street-level garage walls and was, in fact, not a very nice place for people," said Mary Hanes, the board's vice chairwoman. "So we will mark the historic nature of the site while creating a fabulous new plaza where people will gather."

The county plans to preserve the permanent historical marker it erected at the site in 2011. The landowner also plans to create a commemorative Watergate memorial.
