Governor, Dept. of Education Recognize APS CTE Programs

Governor Bob McDonnell and the Virginia Department of Education recognized Arlington Public Schools programs.

"Earlier this month, Governor Bob McDonnell and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) recognized two Arlington Public Schools career and technical education (CTE) programs and one private sector partnership for their work in creating, improving and promoting CTE programs.

2011 Governor’s CTE Exemplary Standards Award
The Arlington Career Center’s Animal Science Program under the direction of Cynthia Schall and Scott Lockhart — The program includes internships with zoos, shelters, an equine medical center, animal hospitals, the National Park Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and pet daycare facilities. Graduates pursue post-secondary education in the animal-science field, including some who aspire to become veterinarians.

The animal science program received a banner and $5,000 from the Dominion Foundation to support continued program improvement.

Creating Excellence Awards
Two APS programs were awarded the Creating Excellence Award which recognizes exemplary projects that promote excellence in career and technical education by the VDOE.

The Arlington Career Center’s Automotive Youth Educational System (AYES) Business and Education Council – The program gives students the opportunity to learn about the automotive trade and provides them with internships at area dealers and repair facilities. Students are taught by ASE certified master auto technicians and can earn college credit from NOVA while in high school. The advisory committee is comprised of area dealers, auto parts stores, independent repair facilities, the VA Auto Dealers Association and former students. Success Through Service: Pentagon City Ritz-Carlton and APS – The partnership, led by Kenmore Middle School family and consumer science teacher Beverly Coyle helps students learn about the hospitality industry, about giving back to their local community, how to give effective presentations and how to run a small business.
