Weekend commuters be warned: There will be significant road work on Interstate 95 and I-395 overnight this weekend.
The Virginia Department of Transportation will close the southbound HOV lanes of I-395 and on I-95 near Exit 148 at Quantico for construction on the I-95 Express Lanes.

The closures are below:

I-95 Southbound Closures

Friday, July 19: At 9:30 p.m., VDOT will begin to close southbound lanes on I-95 near Exit 148.

Between 1 and 4 a.m. Saturday, July 20, I-95 southbound will be completely closed.

They’ll be closed again from 1 to 5 a.m. Sunday, July 21, and from 1 to 3 a.m. on Monday, July 22.

Detour: All I-95 southbound traffic will be directed to Exit 148 to U.S. Route 1 south to Garrisonville Road (Route 610) and back onto I-95 South. Police will be on-site and traffic- signal timing will be adjusted to assist with this detour.

Motorists may experience up to 25 minutes additional travel time.

Lanes will begin to open one at a time when overnight detours end, with all lanes restored by 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings, and by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

HOV Lane Closures

At 11 p.m. Friday, I-95’s entire HOV lane facility will close between Washington, D.C., and Dumfries Road (Route 234).

Saturday, July 20: At 10 a.m., HOV lanes will reopen to southbound traffic from Washington to the Turkeycock (Edsall Road) exit, where drivers must exit the HOV lanes and merge onto I-395 South.

The HOV lanes will stay closed between Turkeycock (Edsall Road) and the Franconia-Springfield Parkway.

Between 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday, the entire HOV lane facility will be closed to reverse the direction of the lanes. The HOV lanes will open to northbound commuters between Dumfries Road and Washington at 4 p.m. All HOV lanes in both directions will be closed once again by 11 p.m.
