Photos: The 2013 Presidential Inauguration at the National Mall

History was made Monday in Washington with the swearing-in ceremonies for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for their second terms of office, and supporters traveled near and far to witness the occasion. 

From sunrise to sunset, Patch was at the National Mall. Unofficial crowd estimates were that 1 million people were on hand for the event.

It was a long day for the Obama family, starting out at 8:30 a.m. with a service across the street from the White House at St. John's Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square. From there, the president, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha, returned to the White House. After a coffee with members of Congress, the group headed in a motorcade from the White House to Capitol Hill.

The president and vice president took their ceremonial oaths of office just before noon from the west side of the U.S. Capitol. Biden was sworn in by Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, while the president was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts.

Performers at the event included Kelly Clarkson, James Taylor and Beyonce. In his inaugural address, Obama made mention of global warming and the rights of gay and lesbian Americans.

After a luncheon in Statuary Hall in the Capitol, a parade was held on Pennsylvania Avenue. Temperatures were in the 40s and the sun made an appearance in the afternoon. The Obamas disembarked from their limousine near the Old Post Office and walked and waved to the crowds. Vice President Biden and his wife Jill Biden did the same, with Biden stopping to shake hands with Terry McAuliffe, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee who is running for governor in Virginia.

Later, the Obamas headed to two official balls where Michelle Obama appeared in a red velvet and chiffon gown designed by Jason Wu, the same designer she wore in the first inauguration.
