Arlington County Sheriff Beth Arthur became the first female president of the Virginia Sheriff's Association this week.
Arthur took the position Tuesday at the association's annual conference in Virginia Beach, according to a news release.
Arthur will serve a one-year term. The organization has about 8,500 members and acts as the primary voice for sheriffs in the Virginia General Assembly.
Arthur was elected sheriff in 2000. She was the first woman elected to that position in Virginia.
At the Arlington County Sheriff's Office, Arthur oversees a $35.6 million budget, a workforce of 265 deputies and civilians, and a 509-bed direct-supervision jail.
