Weekend Track Work June 24-26 on Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines

Blue and Orange Line customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time, according to the release.

Metro issued this release about weekend track work on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines: 

"Metro will continue its effort to rebuild the Metrorail system this weekend on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines. The work will begin around 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, and continue through closing on Sunday, June 26. Customers should take note of the following service impacts: 

Red Line 

• From 9:30 p.m., Friday, June 24 through closing on Sunday, June 26, Red Line trains will share one track between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and Twinbrook stations as Metro conducts platform rehabilitation work at White Flint and Twinbrook stations. 

• From 10 p.m., Friday, June 24 through closing on Sunday, June 26, Red Line trains will share one track between the Takoma and Forest Glen stations to allow for upgrades to train control rooms. 

• Throughout the weekend, all Red Line trains will operate approximately every 24 minutes between the Shady Grove and Glenmont stations. On Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., additional Red Line trains will operate between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and Takoma stations, resulting in service about every 12 minutes between these stations. 

• Red Line customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time. 

Orange and Blue Lines 

• From 10 p.m. Friday, June 24, to closing on Sunday, June 26, Orange and Blue Line trains will share one track between Eastern Market and Stadium Armory stations as Metro replaces rail fasteners to provide a smoother ride. 

• Throughout the weekend, all Blue and Orange Line trains will depart endpoint terminals approximately every 20 minutes. 

• Blue and Orange Line customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time. 

Yellow Line 

• From 10 p.m. Friday, June 24 to closing on Sunday, June 26, Yellow Line trains will share one track between the Pentagon City and L’Enfant Plaza stations as Metro personnel replace rail fasteners to provide a smoother ride and install communications cable to ultimately improve cell phone coverage in the Metrorail system. 

• During this time, Yellow Line trains will operate between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center stations approximately every 20 minutes. 

• Yellow Line customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time. 

Metro is advancing a six-year, $5 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that is focused on safety and maintaining the Metro system in a state of good repair. In FY2012, the CIP includes projects such as replacing escalators; retrofitting track; replacing track circuitry, signs and chain markers on the right of way; rehabilitating third rail, running rail and track pads; rehabilitating 12 Metrorail stations; purchasing 150 new police radios; the replacement of 100 Metrobuses and the rehabilitation of 100 more; rehabilitating three bus garages; and installing 30 track turnouts.
