Friends of John Malvar Reach Out on Twitter

Friends and schoolmates of Washington-Lee High School senior John Malvar, who died Tuesday in a skateboarding crash, express themselves on social media.

"When one door closes, another opens," Arlington teen John Malvar wrote on Twitter in January.

Friends of Malvar, who died Tuesday after a stakeboard crash, are finding solace in his own words on social media. Beyond memories and photos, some are quoting Malvar's own tweets, like "Thank you God for giving me 18 awesome years of life! #Blessed"

A candlelight vigil is planned Wednesday night for Malvar, a senior at Washington-Lee High School who was in line to graduate later this month. The vigil is set to begin at 8:30 p.m. at the school.

@Stinky_Fingers3 wrote: "It hurts so bad knowing someone as kind and cool as @MalvarBased could be takin away from us so young I swear it’s not fair."

Malvar himself tweeted on June 2, two days before his death: "Summertime is the best time."

A fellow band mate posted this photo via Instagram with her friend's initials and a heart on her wrist.

Police say Malvar was doing something similar to "skitching," which is riding on a skateboard while holding onto the back of a car. He lost his balance, fell, and hit his head. Police say he was not wearing a helmet, according to WJLA-TV.

"I will never see a brighter smile than that of John Malvar," Principal Gregg Robertson said in a statement. "He was thrilled last week when he received his perfect attendance award. I think that is very telling of his determination and dedication to himself and others."
