Speak Out: Was Canceling School Monday the Right Call?

Public schools in Arlington are closed today. The winter weather advisory ends at 10 a.m.

Some Arlington residents woke up to ice-covered windshields on their cars and wet roads this morning.

A winter weather advisory was in effect from 5 - 10 a.m. Monday, with warnings about ice, sleet and freezing rain. Temperatures are expected to rise to 40 degrees later today, according to local forecasters.

Early Monday, Arlington Public Schools officials announced schools would remain closed all day. According to a message on the school system's website:

All Arlington Public Schools will be closed today. Offices will be open and a liberal leave policy is in effect. Extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, adult and community education classes, and recreation programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled.

In addition, federal employees may stay home until noon or take unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
