Crystal Rolls: New Street Hockey Season About to Start

You can register now as a team or individual for the season that starts July 11 in Crystal City.

You don't have to be at an ice rink to channel your inner Alex Ovechkin.

Crystal Rolls, the Crystal City street hockey program, has been in full force since May, and a new eight-week season begins next week.

Want to give it a try? Individuals can register now with the DC Social Sports Club for $25, or put together a team of friends and co-workers and you can register as a group for $250.

The next season kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11.

The league so far this year has drawn at least four teams that get more than 40 people out each Thursday night to play, Angela Fox, the chief executive of the Crystal City Business Improvement District, told Patch in an email.

Crystal Rolls turns the parking lot next to 220 20th St. into an outdoor street hockey rink. Fox calls it "another fun way to transform a space."

"Active events like this aren't about bringing thousands of people. They are about showing people different ways to make use of Crystal City assets and spaces and to have fun and be fit," Fox told Patch.

The games usually draw a crowd of 40 to 50 people each week, plus plenty of passersby stop to watch on the fly.

"Based on our outdoor fitness programs, someone connected us with the DC Social Sports Club," Fox said. "We talked about possible partnership ideas and street hockey seemed like a natural fit."

She added: "I always say play!"

The new season runs Thursday evenings from July 11 to September 19.
