Summer Arrives: Temperatures in the 90s This Week

It will be hot, dry and sunny the next several days in Arlington.

If Memorial Day weekend was a bit too cool to go swimming in the Arlington area, the remainder of this week should be plenty warm enough.

A warm front passed through the area Tuesday evening, bringing warm rain and thunderstorms throughout much of the greater Washington area.

High temperatures Wednesday will reach 91 degrees in Arlington County, and climb to a peak of 94 on Friday. Overnight temperatures will be in the upper 60s and low 70s.

The summers of 2010, 2011 and 2012 featured record-setting heat in the Washington metro area. The summer average temperature in 2010 was 81.3 degrees; it dropped to 81.1 degrees in 2011 and was 80.4 degrees in 2012, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). All three summers featured temperatures much higher than the average of 77.7 degrees.

Accuweather predicts the summer will be slightly warmer than normal with above average precipitation.

Capital Weather Gang predicts this summer won’t be quite as hot as the last several summers, and we’ll have slightly more precipitation than average.

Keeping Cool

A few tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency:

  • Stay hydrated with cool, non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Keep your drapes or blinds closed when sun is streaming through your windows.
  • Check on neighbors and family members who do not have air conditioning.
