Miracle on Columbia Pike, Winter Solstice Celebrations, Christmas Events and More This Weekend

Miracle on Columbia Pike: The Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse is screening a couple of Christmas classics this weekend. Catch "Miracle on 34th Street" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and see "It's a Wonderful Life" at 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Half of the proceeds of the "It's a Wonderful Life" screenings will go to the Patrick Henry Elementary School PTA. The drafthouse is at 2903 Columbia Pike in Arlington. School's Out for the Winter! Friday is the last day of school for Arlington Public School students before the Christmas holidays. Students return to school in Arlington on Thursday, Jan. 2, and on Friday, Jan. 3, in Fairfax County.

Holiday Skating & Hockey at Kettler Capitals Iceplex: During the holidays, the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston offers a special schedule of public skating, pick-up hockey, stick-n-shoot, recess at the rink and broom ball. The holiday schedule goes through Jan. 3. Click here for more information.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party: Join Tommy Hunter of Flying Dog Brewing as he hosts RedRocks Arlington's Ugly Christmas Sweater Party from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at 2501 9th Road S. in Arlington. More info here.

Experience Christmas in Bethlehem on Friday. The Church of the Apostles will host an interactive experience with Jesus’ story. The event is at 7 p.m. Friday at the Sherwood Community Center on 3740 Old Lee Highway in Fairfax. Admission is free.

The winter solstice, the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere, is this Saturday.

To celebrate, the Vienna Choral Society is presenting “Solstice: Light and Dark.” The show is at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Vienna Baptist Church on 541 Marshall Road S.W. in Vienna. Find out more.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax is also hosting winter solstice service at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the church on 2709 Hunter Mill Road in Oakton. Find out more.  

Dance at the Colvin Run Dance Hall: Enjoy a night of dancing at the Colvin Run Dance Hall, 10201 Colvin Run Road in Great Falls, starting at 8 p.m. Saturday. For $15, the evening begins with a Viennese Waltz lesson by Craig Bukowski. The dance follows from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Dress is "ballroom casual." Everyone is welcome. More information here.

The Workhouse Arts Center is presenting a Christmas Concert: O Holy Night Friday and Saturday. The performances are at 7:30 at the center at 9601 Ox Road in Lorton. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for youth.

Holiday Food & Wine Event: Stop by Balducci's, at 6655 Old Dominion Drive in McLean, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for a wine tasting with a focus on holiday gatherings, and learn what wines pair with your favorite holiday dishes. More info here.
