New Year's Resolution: Run a 5K

The Washington area is full of runners and running events.

Running is an inexpensive and flexible way to keep a new year's resolution to get more active or lose a few pounds. The Washington area is lucky to have great outdoor running options and plenty of events to train for if you need a deadline to help you meet your goal. The Mayo Clinic offers a free online training schedule developed by Olympian Jeff Galloway to get you 5K run ready in just seven weeks, even if you are a beginner. A 5K run is 3.1 miles. "Don't be daunted by the distance. A 5K run is a great distance for a beginner. And you can prepare for a 5K run in just two months," according to the Mayo Clinic website. Registration Open for Arlington Turkey Trot 5K

Thanksgiving morning race expected to draw 3,000 runners.

Registration is now open for the seventh annual Turkey Trot 5K Race hosted by the Christ Church of Arlington. The fun run/walk is expected to draw 3,000 people and goes through the Lyon Park and Ashton Heights neighborhoods at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving day, according to the church’s website. Organizers say the race fills up soon, so potential runners are encouraged to register early. The race starts off at the corner of Pershing Drive and North Highland Street, the website states. It supports these local charities: the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless (AACH), Doorways for Women and Families, and the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
