The Arlington Chamber of Commerce recently honored public servants who went above and beyond the call of duty in the 31st Annual Valor Awards. This year, the awards recognized members from Arlington’s Office of Emergency Management, police department, fire department and sheriff’s office. Supporters 'optimistic' about bill becoming law next year.
The Virginia DREAM Act — legislation that would have allowed children of illegal immigrants to receive in-state college tuition — has died in Richmond, but supporters are optimistic the bill will pass next year. "I was encouraged," said Del. Tom Rust, R-Herndon. "The bill has never gotten this far before. In fact, it's never gotten anywhere. I was encouraged by the response. It got a lot of support. I will be introducing it again next year, and I will be working on it between now and then." For the past seven years, similar legislation has died in a House subcommittee. This year, though, the measure enjoyed bipartisan, unanimous support on the subcommittee level, and it then passed the full House Education Committee with a 17-4 vote. It …

Chamber held annual meeting Friday at Sheraton Pentagon City.
The Arlington Chamber of Commerce honored Marymount University and MTFA Architecture Principal Michael Foster at its 88th Annual Meeting Friday at the Sheraton Pentagon City. The chamber also looked back on its accomplishments for 2012 and ahead to 2013. NBC Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd, an Arlington resident, was the keynote speaker. Foster — whose firm has been involved in a number of high-profile projects, like The Views at Clarendon and the Clean Technology Center in Courthouse — received the President's Award. Todd predicts 2013 Virginia gubernatorial race between Cuccinelli and McAuliffe will be 'nasty.'
Arlington resident and NBC Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd said Friday that he wasn't looking forward to Ken Cuccinelli and Terry McAuliffe dominating Virginia's airwaves next year. He predicted the 2013 gubernatorial race would be "nasty." It'll likely be between Cuccinelli, a Republican and Virginia Attorney General, and McAuliffe, a McLean businessman and former Democratic National Committee chairman. Chuck Todd, chief White House correspondent for NBC News, will by the keynote speaker at the Arlington Chamber of Commerce's 88th Annual Meeting at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel. The meeting will celebrate the chamber's accomplishment's for 2012 and look forward to 2013, according to a news release. Attendees can expect to hear details of key initiatives and development plans for the upcoming year, along with the presentation of several awards. Attendance is $55 per person. Temporary move will allow for demolition of existing space in the Courthouse community, plus construction of a new multi-story residential building.
The Arlington Chamber of Commerce is moving to Ballston for the next two years. The chamber, which has been at home at 2009 14th St. N. for more than two decades, is making the temporary move to accommodate the demolition of its existing space. Developers plan to build a new multi-story apartment building on that site in the Courthouse community. Once it's complete, the chamber will return to 14th Street North as a first-floor commercial tenant of the new building. Meanwhile, the chamber's office will be at 4600 Fairfax Dr., Suite 804, in Ballston. To help with the move, the chamber will be closed Thursday, Friday and Monday.
