Arlington, GWU Celebrate New Baseball Field in Barcroft

George Washington University Colonials will continue to use field for practice, home games.

Recently Arlington County opened the renovated baseball field at Barcroft Park that will be the home of the George Washington University men's baseball team for the foreseeable future. The field, one of three county-owned, 90-foot baseball diamonds, is the first synthetic turf baseball field in Arlington County. "This is really sort of groundbreaking for us, because we'll be able to have kids play on here all year round," Arlington Parks and Recreation Director Jane Rudolph says in the clip. Arlington Board OKs $524K for Fort Myer Heights Park Improvements

Construction should begin early next year.

The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved spending up to about $524,000 to reconstruct the playground at the Fort Myer Heights Park and to make the park more accessible to people with disabilities. The half-acre park, at 1400 Fort Myer Heights Drive, already is home to basketball and volleyball courts, a picnic area and grassy field. Those amenities will remain, and new plantings will be dispersed throughout the park. The reconstructed playground will feature a "natural look," according to a county news release. Play equipment, for instance, will be designed to look like trees and wood to better blend in with the surrounding community. Arlington Board OKs $2.9M Renovation to Rocky Run Park

The 2.3-acre park in Clarendon-Courthouse will feature more amenities for tots and school-aged children.

The Arlington County Board late Tuesday approved a $2.9 million contract for a substantial renovation of Rocky Run Park in the Clarendon-Courthouse neighborhood. The 2.3-acre park, at the intersection of North Barton and North Fairfax streets, will get a substantial facelift — improvements include new tot and school-aged playground equipment and a picnic shelter at the upper end of the park; two lighted hard-surface courts; a lighted synthetic field; and lawn areas, improved accessibility and "extensive" landscaping, according to a county staff report. 9/11 Commemoration in Arlington

Residents and visitors invited to remember Sept. 11 at a ceremony overlooking the Pentagon.

Arlington County is hosting a 10-year anniversary remembrance of Sept. 11 at the Air Force Memorial on Saturday. The 7:30 p.m. event will include performances by Wakefield High School's Madrigals choir, the Macedonia Baptist Church music ministry, and the Arlington County Combined Honor Guard. County Board Chairman Chris Zimmerman will also speak. The U.S. Air Force Brass Quintet Ensemble and the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard will perform. Jim Laychak, president of the Pentagon Memorial Fund, whose brother was one of the 184 victims of the attack on the Pentagon, will give the commemorative speech.
