Arlington Police Ramp Up Seat Belt Enforcement Efforts

Mobilization is part of national Click It or Ticket campaign.

The Arlington County Police Department is ramping up efforts to enforce seat belt laws as part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign. That means an officer would have to pull someone over for another offense — speeding, for instance, or running a red light — and then could issue that person a seat belt ticket if he or she were in violation of the law. A seat belt ticket comes with a $25 penalty, according to state law. In 2011, Virginia's seat belt use was about 78 percent…

News must be light when a can of beer gets this much publicity. It seems that Arlington County police are focusing on the wrong things. Car theft in Arlington is rampant with little or no press attention. Maybe the officers should get into the neighborhoods more often. That would be something we could all drink to.   more ›

County Disciplines Employees, Restructures Senior Travel Program

Arlington police and the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office found no criminal activity or intent, county officials say.

Arlington County announced this week that it had restructured a popular senior travel program in the wake of problems caused by lax oversight — including employees maintaining independent bank accounts for the program that were not subject to county auditing or financial controls. “The Senior Travel Program is a very successful program that unfortunately, cut corners in its operations,” Arlington County Manager Barbara Donnellan said in a statement. The county found out about the accounts in November 2010 and subsequently coordinated an investigation with the Arlington County Police Department and the local Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. That concluded in May 2012 and no criminal activity or intent was found, according to a news release…
