Five local filmmakers were recognized at Arlington Independent Media's Rosebud festival.
A few local filmmakers took home $1,000 at the Rosebud Film and Video Festival awards Sunday at the Clarendon Ballroom. The festival, now in its 22nd year, draws talent from Washington, Maryland and Virginia. About 250 people came out to view 20 films included at a showcase Saturday at the Artisphere in Rosslyn. The following winners were announced: Matthew Pickett for "The King's River" Gemal Woods for "Close Ties: Tying on a New Tradition" Laura Gamse for "The Creators" Robert Parrish for "Next to Heaven: Winner" And Steven Vagias for "Gutted." The Arlington students spent the summer working on documentaries with Arlington Independent Media's Document Arlington project.
Six Arlington high school students spent the summer learning about television production and documentary filmmaking at Arlington Independent Media (AIM). The interns, Johnny Bowman, Ramiro Pena, C.J. Burka, Bailey Kowalski, Aislyn Rivera and Evan Waffle, created two documentary shorts exploring food issues in Arlington, according to a press release from AIM. The movie titled “Scrambled Eggs” focuses on the cultivation and regulation of backyard hens in Arlington County and “Food Fight” asks Arlington food truck and brick-and-mortar restaurant owners how they co-exist in the community, the press release states. The channel is off the air due to Superstorm Sandy.
The Clarendon-based Arlington Independent Media is off the air for the foreseable future after a power outage affected the channel's servers. The full message from AIM's newsletter: We hope all of our members and friends made it through Hurricane Sandy safe and sound! While thankfully we did not experience flooding or facility damage at AIM, we did, much like most of Clarendon, experience major power outages. At some point during the storm these power hits caused damage to the server that programs the channel. The server could take a few days to repair and AIM will be off the air during that time. From walking and biking to the proposed Columbia Pike trolley, from the cost of living in Arlington to the cost of doing business here, the three candidates for one seat on the Arlington County Board covered a wide range of topics Thursday night at a Patch-Arlington Independent Media forum. Patch and Arlington Independent Media will host a forum for Arlington County Board candidates that will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. Thursday. AIM will rebroadcast the forum multiple times before the November election. Patch also will feature the video on its Arlington County and Clarendon-Courthouse sites. Next month, voters will determine who represents them from the federal to the local level. Arlington County Board member Libby Garvey, a Democrat, faces opposition from Republican Matt Wavro and Green Party candidate Audrey Clement. Camp is for 10- to 13-year-old aspiring filmmakers.
Arlington Independent Media has a few remaining spots open for its two-week Video Production Camp for 10- to 13-year-olds. The camp is designed to introduce young filmmakers to the basic concepts of media literacy and crucial thinking. Participants will develop a story idea, write a script, shoot and edit video for their own production, according to AIM. "At AIM, we want to change the way youth relate to media," the nonprofit states on its website. "We teach skills that transform youth from passive consumers of media, to active creators of media. Students will produce two short documentaries about Arlington.
Arlington Independent Media has extended its application deadline to April 23 for students interested video production. Six Arlington Public Schools students will be selected to participate in a six-week television production apprenticeship program. They will work together to create two 15-minute documentaries about Arlington. The program, part of the Document Arlington Project, includes training, access to professional equipment, production development assistance and public screenings. The apprenticeship lasts from July 9 to Aug. 22 at Arlington Independent Media's studio in Clarendon. Students will receive a $750 stipend for the summer. Patch and Arlington Independent Media will host a candidate forum this week for the five Democrats seeking their party's nomination for the vacant seat on the Arlington County Board. Later this month, the Arlington County Democratic Committee will hold a caucus open to all registered voters in the county. Following party rules, the caucus will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan 19 at Washington-Lee High School, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at Kenmore Middle School.
