Case goes before an Arlington County Grand Jury in December.
James Sylvester Caroline, the man accused of killing a Columbia Pike jewelry store owner in late July, has waived his right to a preliminary hearing. His case will go before an Arlington County Grand Jury next month. Caroline, 53, was scheduled to have his hearing Thursday. Such hearings are held to determine if enough probable cause exists to send a case to a grand jury. Last week, Caroline waived his right to the hearing, Commonwealth's Attorney Theo Stamos said. His case will now go before a grand jury on Dec. 17. Caroline is accused of killing 52-year-old Tommy Wong during a robbery of Wong's jewelry store on Columbia Pike in late July. Washington man held without bond following incident at Courthouse pharmacy.
A man in a wheelchair was arrested and charged with armed robbery Thursday night, according to the Arlington County Police Department. William Louis Chase, Jr., 45, of Washington, allegedly entered the CVS Pharmacy in the Courthouse neighborhood shortly after 6 p.m. Chase took alcohol and an electric razor and placed the items in a backpack before leaving without paying for them, according to police. Employees saw the theft on their surveillance camera, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. A store employee went outside and pushed the man back into the pharmacy to recover the items. Top crime/public safety news of the week: The following incidents were reported Wednesday by the Arlington County Police Department: Robbery A woman walking home from the Ballston Metro Station had her purse snatched just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to police. The woman told police that she briefly chased the man before losing track of him. The robber was heavy set, approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and bald. Attempted Armed Robbery A sales clerk at Nordstrom’s jewelry department was held at gunpoint, according to police. The robber entered the store at 1400 S. Hayes St. at about 10 a.m. Friday. The preliminary hearing for 53-year-old James Sylvester Caroline in Arlington County General District Court has been postponed from early October to Nov. 29. Caroline is accused of killing 52-year-old Tommy Wong during a robbery of Wong's jewelry store on Columbia Pike in late July. Preliminary hearings are held to determine if enough probable cause exists to send a case to a grand jury. Caroline's attorney requested the later date, and Commonwealth's Attorney Theo Stamos did not object. "We're also waiting for some results and for some more investigation to come in," Stamos said. Police: Firecracker explodes in one assailant's hand, scaring men away.
The Arlington County Police Department is looking for two men who attempted to hold up a 24-hour convenience store but ended up scaring themselves away before anything was stolen. At about 3:25 a.m. Sunday, two men entered the 7-Eleven near the intersection of George Mason Drive and Columbia Pike, according to information police have released. One of the men pulled a gun on the clerk, the only employee in the store at the time, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. The second man entered the store and a firecracker exploded in his hand, scaring both men, according to police. They ran away. Investigators have accused Caroline of killing a 52-year-old man during an armed robbery last week.
Arlington County police today formally charged 53-year-old James Sylvester Caroline of Washington, D.C., with the murder of a Columbia Pike jewelry store owner. Police arrested Caroline on Wednesday on a probation violation. He has been and will continue to be held without bond, according to police. Caroline is accused of killing Tommy Wong, a 52-year-old Herndon resident, at Capital Jewelers on Columbia Pike during an armed robbery last week. Caroline also is the suspect in a June 9 armed robbery in northwest Washington, according to police. Investigators are not planning on bringing any additional charges against Caroline in relation to the Arlington homicide at this time, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. Sternbeck would not …

Tommy Wong always had a kind word for everyone. Wong was found dead late Friday, the victim of what police say was an armed robbery of his Arlington jewelry store earlier that day. But his words — and actions — continue to resonate and touch the lives of people far beyond the Columbia Pike neighborhood where he worked. More than 200 people gathered in front of Capital Jewelers, 3219A Columbia Pike, on Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of Wong. Almost one week after the death of 52-year-old Tommy Wong, his killer remains at large. Wong was killed Friday afternoon during an armed robbery of his Columbia Pike jewelry store. Investigators describe the suspect as a man in his mid-50s, about 5 foot, 7 inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a bright yellow traffic vest at the time of the attack. Detectives on the Arlington County Police Department's eight-man homicide/robbery unit are leading an intense investigation and doing "whatever it takes" to apprehend the man, police Sgt.
