Arlington National Cemetery will host the annual National Memorial Day Observance on Monday to honor this country's fallen military men and women. President Barack Obama will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at 11 a.m. and then deliver remarks at the cemetery's Memorial Amphitheater, according to the White House. "Observing Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery is like no other place in the country," cemetery spokeswoman Jennifer Lynch told Patch. Vice President Joe Biden visited Clarendon's Liberty Tavern Wednesday. He was there filming a segment for MSNBC's "Morning Joe" show that is scheduled to air Thursday morning. "They told us they had a short list of restaurants in Arlington and Alexandria and Liberty Tavern was chosen," said Mark Fedorchak, who is an owner of the Liberty Tavern, Northside Social Coffee & Wine, and Lyon Hall restaurants in Clarendon. Members of the Secret Service were spotted outside the restaurant by Twitter users as early as 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. An Arlington man whose sister was killed in the 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech will attend President Barack Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday night as a guest of U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va. Omar Joseph Samaha lost his youngest sister, Reema, in the Virginia Tech shooting. Since her death, he has advocated for policies to reduce gun violence. Hightower, who traveled from Brooklyn, N.Y., with her children, said they wouldn’t miss this inauguration for the world. Metro is still accepting orders for commemorative SmarTrip cards for the Jan. 21, 2013 inauguration of President Barack Obama. "Inauguration Day, January 21, 2013" and Obama's picture, along with "America Makes History Again" adorn the cards, which are $15. That's only $1 more than a one-day paper pass, according to a news release from the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority. The cards come pre-loaded with a one-day pass that provides unlimited Metrorail travel on the first day it is used. It can also be used as a "flash pass" for unlimited Metrobus transportation on Inauguration Day, the news release states. Update 10:04 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7 - With all Virginia precincts finally reporting, President Barack Obama received 1,868,191 votes from Virginia voters, according to final but unofficial data from the Virginia State Board of Elections. That's 50.57 percent of the vote. Gov. Mitt Romney received 1,767,692 votes, or 47.85 percent. The three third-party candidates on the ballot received a combined 1.42 percent of votes, and write-in candidates the remainder. Lizzette Arias arrived in Arlington when she was 2 months old. She came with her family, who had immigrated here from Bolivia. They settled into an apartment near an elementary school. "I used to watch out the window, the kids marching out to school. I was not allowed to go to school — for no good reason, I thought," Arias said. "The truth was that my parents were afraid to enroll me because of our immigration status. I asked Santa Claus and prayed to God that one day I would go to school." Arias considers herself lucky to have been able to eventually enroll in the third grade. In 2007, she graduated from Wakefield High School as a valedictorian.
